It was in 1784, that Josiah Spode perfected the process of
blue under glaze printing on earthenware from hand-engraved copper plates.
This not only assured his fame and the future prosperity of his company,
but also was essential to the phenomenal growth of the English china
industry. He then went on to make the single most important discovery in
the history of his industry - the formula for Fine Bone China - which was
to make the name, Spode, famous throughout the world. English Fine Bone
China is one of the great, classic products, universally admired and
generally accepted as the premier material for china, an inspiration for
passionate collecting and everyday pleasure. Now 200 years later bone
china still remains the most popular base for the production of
sophisticated patterns and everyday dinnerware.
Many Spode
dinnerware and fine china patterns are instantly recognisable, none more
so than the classic earthenware pattern, Blue Italian, with its Chinese
border and central scenes of Roman ruins. To choose a Spode china pattern
from the dazzling selection available is one of the most difficult but
ultimately most satisfying decision for the home maker
today.
