Spode Blue Italian Spode

Spode

The original blue and white designs from Spode have become some of the most collectable in the history of ceramics. Spode Blue Italian has been in continuous production for nearly two hundred years and is undoubtedly one of the all-time classic china patterns. The central scene is thought to be of ruins in Italy and is framed by an Imari border inspired by Chinese porcelain.

Spode Woodland china uses the sepia tone border of British Flowers from 1828 to frame the striking animal and bird studies including game birds, indigenous American animals, turkeys and dogs.

Spode Christmas Tree china was introduced in 1938. Spode Christmas Tree represents for many, cherished memories of family celebrations and the delightful anticipation of Christmas coming. Spode Christmas Tree china is an invitation to a charming table that becomes a family tradition as your collection and memories grow.

Josiah Spode was the founder of the Spode pottery manufactory and known as Josiah Spode I even though his father was also a Josiah Spode. Spode is the oldest pottery company still in existence. In the early 1760’s, Josiah Spode, a man who as a six-year old had watched his father buried in a pauper’s grave, eventually opened his own small pottery and bone china factory. It was in 1784, that Josiah Spode perfected the process of blue underglaze printing on earthenware from hand-engraved copper plates. This not only assured his fame, but was also essential to the phenomenal growth of the English dinnerware industry.
