Portmeirion Botanic Garden Portmeirion

Portmeirion Pottery

A true British classic from Portmeirion pottery is the Portmeirion Botanic Garden that was designed by the celebrated designer Susan Williams-Ellis. Portmeirion Botanic Garden’s delightful mixture of herbal motifs set a new trend for casual dining in the nineteen seventies and today Portmeirion Botanic Garden looks as fresh and exciting as it was when it was launched by Portmeirion pottery.

Sophie Conran Portmeirion

The perfect collection for contemporary living, make everyday a beautiful day with Sophie Conran Portmeirion. Developed by Sophie Conran, the collection is delicate and practical, and each piece is able to withstand the rigors of modern life moving with ease from the table to the dishwasher, the freezer to the oven – even the mugs.

Portmeirion Pomona

With its bountiful representations of seasonal fruitfulness, Portmeirion Pomona brings the orchard to your table and is the perfect accessory for those serious about cooking and eating. Portmeirion Pomona is a colourful range of china and cookware featuring tempting blackberries, ripe plums, juicy apricots, sweet cherries, rosy apples, plump strawberries and succulent pears.

The famous Italian style village of Portmeirion in Wales was created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. His daughter, Susan Williams-Ellis, having studied under Bernard Leach and Henry Moore, was asked to create a few gift items for sale in the village shop. With her reputation for originality, Susan Williams-Ellis’ pottery soon became collectable, leading to her acquisition of two small potteries. The beauty of the Portmeirion collection of pottery, giftware and cookware, stems from Susan Williams-Ellis’ ability to design and model shapes that are both functional and attractive. Susan sadly passed away in 2007 but the pottery design department continues to create new Portmeirion products maintaining the highest standards. Associations with external designers such as Sophie Conran, Jacqueline Wilson and Eric Carle have broadened Portmeirion’s traditional customer base to include children and couples drawing up wedding lists. Frequently referred to as Portmeirion China, the correct term is actually Pottery. Simply speaking, the difference between porcelain (or china) and pottery is that porcelain (or china) is translucent and allows light to penetrate, while pottery does not. Porcelain is commonly referred to as china as for many years, only the Chinese were able to produce such translucent high quality pieces. Having said that, in the early 1990s, there was a range of Portmeirion China but this is no longer made. Most Portmeirion products are still manufactured in their Stoke on Trent pottery.
